A Game of Firsts: Surf Win On The Road

On Saturday afternoon, SoCal Surf made the northbound journey from San Diego to Ventura to take on Ventura County Fusion.  After dropping three of their last four matches, Surf was eager to take care of business and earn three points for a second time from Ventura County Fusion. Mission accomplished.

The boys in blue took an early 1-0 lead just 32 seconds into the contest when Malek Bashti slotted the ball across the face of the goal for an Adam Vargas finish, his second goal in as many games.  With the early lead, Surf set the tone for the match and the team was well on their way to earning three points on the road.

Ventura County Fusion had the opportunities to equalize during the first half, but was not able to capitalize before Surf doubled the advantage in the 30th minute.  Moving the ball up the right sideline in transition, Eddie Benito battled with two defenders before serving the ball into the center for a Sam Palano goal, his first of the season.

Surf continued to apply pressure heading into halftime.  Malek Bashti saw his first potential goal for Surf, a powerful header, palmed away in the 35th minute on a free kick from Vargas into the middle of the box.

With just over 30 minutes remaining in the match, Vargas intercepted the ball on a poor clearance up the middle of the field from the Fusion goalkeeper.  Benito received the ball from Vargas just inside the 18 yard box and buried it in the back of the net for his first goal of the season to give Surf a commanding 3-0 advantage.

The team wide effort was more than enough to secure the victory for Surf on Saturday night in Ventura, despite a late goal from the Fusion.  Although a great victory to get the team back into the win column for the first time since June 10, it was a night of firsts for several of the Surf players.  Malek Bashti earned his first assist of the season, Sam Palano and Eddie Benito scored their first goals, and 16 year-old goalkeeper Collin Travasos earned his first PDL minutes.

Surf will go toe-to-toe against their San Diego rival, the Zest, on Wednesday, July 10 at 4:00pm at San Diego High School. Although technically an away match, it will not feel as such for the local SoCal Surf team who have just wrapped up a two week road stretch.
