A native of San Jose, CA, Malek Bashti is currently attending University of California, San Diego. He got exposed early to soccer when he played with the San Jose Earthquakes Academy for 4 seasons. A 2012 graduate of Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, Malek competed in soccer, football and tennis for the Matadors.

He made his way to San Diego in 2013 and began his studies at Muir College majoring in Microbiology. His debut in soccer came off the bench and finally scored his first collegiate goal in overtime versus Chico State for the CCAA Championship. As a freshman, he earned CCAA All-Academic honors. 

It was in his sophomore year where he excelled on the pitch earned CCAA All-Academic for the second season in a row. He appeared in 19 matches, which included 17 starts at forward. During the season, he tied for third on the team with 7 points off three goals and one assist.  His first career assist came on 75th-minute winner in 2-1 win at home vs. Dixie State.

Malek speaks four languages: English, French, Spanish and Farsi works as a research assistant at Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, part of UC San Diego Health. His most memorable moment at UCSD is scoring the game-winner, his first collegiate goal, against rival Chico State in overtime as a freshman in 2013 CCAA semifinals. Malek joins the PDL this season for the first time and hopes to create similar memories up top against our Western Conference rivals.
